Burn wound injuries are a common injury worldwide. Despite the unfortunate regularity of these injuries burn wound therapy continues to be a challenging and dynamic field of medicine and rehabilitation. The first and most critical step in burn wound care and wound bed preparation is the removal of eschar and other non-vitalised tissue with the ultimate goal of wound healing and closure. Surgical debridement has been the standard of care for decades but it is not without risk. Alternative non surgical methods of debridement have been explored and researched. These methods provide less invasive and more selective options for the removal of non vitalised tissue from a burn wound. This course explores five evidence supported non-surgical debridement methods available for the treatment of burn wound injuries many of which can be performed at the patients bedside or in an outpatient setting. Non surgical Debridement might not fit within the scope of practice of all physiotherapists or other rehabilitation professionals however it is important to know when debridement is indicated types of debridement and the effect it would have on the patients pain and healing.
