Patellofemoral pain is a common presenting condition in clinical practice. However there are a number of other conditions that can masquerade as patellofemoral pain. These conditions vary between the adolescent and adult populations. Because there can be a cross-over in symptoms we need to look outside the box and consider exactly what could be causing a patient's pain. There are often clues in the patient's history which provide vital information for the differential diagnosis.
