Course overview

To borrow from Newton's third law, every action has a reaction. Behaviors are actions, but how we react to them is pivotal. As healthcare practitioners, we need to recognize the best practices for how to address challenging behaviors when they occur. We can increase, decrease, or have no effect on a child's behaviors. As part of this course, you will compare different theoretical approaches to addressing challenging behaviors from the clinical and behavioral perspective. Basic behavioral principles from applied behavior analysis, such as reinforcement and punishment, will be defined, and feasibility of carrying out behavioral strategies in healthcare will be discussed.
