GENDER IDENTITY AND GENDER VARIANCE (4 CE)

Course overview

Transgender and gender-variant people have a variety of concerns for which they may seek the assistance of mental health professionals. This report highlights opportunities for professionals in the mental health field to advance social justice as well as to support competent and ethical practice by promoting research, education, and professional development concerning transgender issues among practitioners. Learning Objectives: 1. Delineate the key concerns and issues revolving around gender identity and gender variance. 2. Evaluate the results of a 2005 APA survey of its membership regarding the experiences and concerns of psychologists and students who identify as transgender or gender variant. 3. Evaluate the research on Gender Identity Disorder in adults: demographics, diagnosis, health care, transition-related issues, and mental health. 4. Evaluate the research on Gender Identity Disorder in children and adolescents: demographics, diagnosis and assessment, developmental trajectories, treatment and intervention, causal processes. 5. Evaluate the implications of the conclusions formed from this report and the recommendations for impacting public policy.
