Course overview

Stroke is the number one neurological condition treated by the therapist. Due to the continuum of motor recovery, therapists must be able to have intervention approaches in all phases of recovery. This seminar, from a bottom up approach, will give the therapist the skills to provide appropriate treatment at each stage of motor recovery. Therapists have an ethical obligation to provide the best and most efficient treatment that provides that "just right" challenge within each stage of motor recovery. Participants will learn hands on treatment strategies in each stage of motor recovery from stroke. This will give the clinician an approach to preventing hemiplegic shoulder pain and enhancing function. Neurodevelopmental theories will drive the treatment approaches and range of motion techniques will help prevent hemiplegic shoulder pain. One taping strategy will enhance upper extremity function. The participant will learn these strategies through lecture content, case studies and video-based demonstration. Participants will return to their treatment settings and immediately have an expanded "toolbox" of treatment techniques for any given individual at any stage of motor recovery from stroke.
