Professional Ethics for Massage Therapists

After completing this course, participants should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:

1. Define "Ethics" and "Boundaries" in Massage Therapy: Participants will be able to articulate the meaning of 'ethics' and 'boundaries' within the context of massage therapy, understanding their critical role in maintaining a professional and safe environment for both the therapist and the client.
2. List Five Types of Boundaries: Participants will identify and explain five types of boundaries relevant to massage therapy, such as physical, emotional, professional, sexual, and financial boundaries, demonstrating an understanding of their importance in therapeutic relationships.
3. Define "Transference" and "Countertransference": Participants will be able to clearly define and distinguish between transference and countertransference, recognizing how these psychological phenomena can impact the therapist-client relationship and the importance of managing them effectively.
4. Understand and Prevent Sexual Harassment: Participants will learn to identify behaviors that constitute sexual harassment in the massage therapy context. They will also be equipped with strategies to prevent such situations and respond appropriately if they occur, emphasizing the importance of a safe and respectful environment.
5. Apply Principles of Confidentiality: Participants will understand the importance of maintaining client confidentiality. They will be able to articulate the legal and ethical requirements of confidentiality, including when and how information may be shared and the implications of breaching confidentiality.
6. Recognize and Address Misclassification of Workers: Participants will gain an understanding of the ethical and legal considerations surrounding the misclassification of workers in the massage therapy field. They will learn how to identify misclassification and understand the implications it has for both therapists and clients, including aspects related to benefits, rights, and workplace protections.
