Course overview

This course describes how electrical currents can be used to activate muscles, regain muscle strength, and/or restore motor function. Techniques and strategies will be explained to help learners select the optimal electrode set up and the best stimulus parameters to generate complete and comfortable muscle contractions. A list of clinical conditions that have been shown to benefit from neuromuscular electrical stimulation treatment and contraindications, precautions, and risks related to NMES treatments will be explained so that learners can identify the best candidates for NMES treatment. A step-by-step application procedure will be provided so that NMES protocols can be customized and adjusted based on the nature of the motor impairment and the individuals stage of recovery.
