Laws and Rules for Physician Assistants

After taking this course a physician assistant should be able to:

• Understand the role of the board and the PA advisory committee
• Understand the Board’s requirements for licensure, maintenance of licensure and renewal for physician assistants
• Know and apply the requirements for prescriptive authority
• Know and apply the rules pertaining to prescribing of legend and controlled drugs by physician assistants
• Understand, differentiate between, and utilize the different forms and documentation required to practice as a PA under the supervision of a primary supervising physician or locum tenens physician: Intent to Practice, Clinical Practice Guidelines, Credentials File, and Performance Plan
• Know the limits and scope of practice as a physician assistant in the state of Louisiana
• Understand the required use and best practices pertaining to the Prescription Monitoring Program of the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy
• Understand and apply the basic ethical guidelines underpinning the practice of physician assistants in the state of Louisiana
• Understand the procedures the Board follows upon receiving a complaint about a physician assistant
• Understand the investigation and adjudication processes if a complaint leads to a formal investigation
• Know where to go and what to do in the case of an impaired professional whether self or other
