Course overview

Atrophy of alveolar ridges following tooth extraction is a common clinical finding and can severely compromise the esthetic and functional rehabilitation of patients. Preservation of the alveolar ridge has become the standard of care and a necessity for the successful contemporary clinician, specifically when the treatment plan involves dental implants. Numerous options of biomaterials and surgical techniques can often be overwhelming for the clinician and can lead to improper clinical management. The use of evidence-based surgical techniques, particulate bone grafts and membranes, and review of the literature is the best way to effectively treat our patients. The world of biologics in oral surgery have exploded since the 1990's. Autologous platelet products offer a natural boost to the body's natural healing capacity. Ridge preservation relies on tried and tested protocols, and natural biologics have a wealth of literature support as well as clinical applications. From improved healing to enhanced materials handling, there is no reason not to incorporate platelet products to increase our odds of success. This course is designed to teach the general dentist and specialists how to effectively and predictably maintain the dimensions of the alveolar ridge following tooth extractions. This course will demonstrate predictable and evidence-based techniques for successful ridge preservation, resulting in less chair time, less traumatic patient experience, and increased referrals. In addition, the course will cover the biology, literature, and different uses of PRP (platelet rich plasma) and PRF (platelet rich fibrin) as an adjunct to ridge preservation literature. Plenty of cases will be demonstrated starting from the extraction time till the final implant crown placement.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the benefits and understand the rationale for ridge preservation procedures.
  2. Realize how the biologic events during healing of the extraction socket relate to the ridge preservation concepts
  3. Understand the role of different biomaterials used for ridge preservation and the importance of platelet rich plasma and platelet rich fibrin. In addition, the participants will learn the centrifuge concepts, review the history and discuss the biology of platelet aggregates, and see the process step by step how to create platelet products
  4. Comprehend the differences between ridge preservation and ridge augmentation procedures
  5. Apply basic surgical concepts related to ridge preservation procedures with or without the use of L-PRF at their everyday clinical practice


The educational teaching methodology used in this course is a self-study lecture presented via pre-recorded webinar in concert with an accompanying PowerPoint presentation. Both the pre-recorded webinar and the PowerPoint presentation incorporate a variety of audio and visual cues to enhance audience members’ understanding and retention of key concepts.
