Course overview

Discussion about the diagnosis and management of influenza virus, including risk factors and presenting signs/symptoms, drug and non-drug strategies to prevent influenza, the differences between the various diagnostic tests used to detect influenza, and available antiviral therapies used for prevention and treatment of influenza. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe sickness and may lead to death in some individuals. Approximately eight percent of the U.S. population gets sick from influenza each season, with a range between three to 11 percent, depending on the season. While the impact of influenza varies from season to season, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. Certain individuals are more likely to be negatively impacted by the flu and experience complications, and prevention is key in these individuals. Healthcare providers and nurses must be aware of signs and symptoms of flu, as well as methods of prevention and treatment in order for best patient outcomes. This program discusses risk factors and presenting signs/symptoms of influenza, pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to prevent influenza, diagnostic tests used to detect influenza, and antiviral therapies used for prevention and treatment of influenza.
