Course overview

Small business employers may have special problems in dealing with workplace safety and health hazards; while large corporations can afford full-time safety engineers and industrial hygienists. Yet the workplace hazards that cause thousands of injuries and illnesses every year are as prevalent in small businesses as in larger firms. OSHA inspections can have real positive results. According to a recent study, in the three years following an OSHA inspection that results in penalties, injuries and illnesses drop on average by 22 percent. Despite OSHAs efforts, every year more than 6,000 Americans die from workplace injuries, and 6 million people suffer nonfatal injuries at work. Injuries alone cost the economy more than $110 billion a year. This course can help to guide small business employers establish their own safety and health programs, how to manage safety and health protection at their own workplace, and how to provide safe and healthful workplaces.
