Course overview

In this course, the learner will gain knowledge of the bowel and bladder issues that can plague the neurologically involved child. Common diagnoses discussed include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorders. Participants will be able to understand how each of these neurologic issues affects the bowel, bladder, and toilet training. Treatment including exercise strategies, education, and equipment will be discussed. At the end of the course, participants should be able to set realistic expectations for continence for their patients. They will also be able to assess for further equipment needs and positioning strategies for their nonambulatory patients. Participants will have a greater understanding of the bowel and bladder needs for this special population and should be able to create treatment plans to address these issues. This course is appropriate for PTs, OTs, and RNs treating children in an acute or outpatient environment.
