Course overview

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a medical procedure used primarily in the treatment of various hematologic malignancies and other disorders, where healthy stem cells from a genetically matched donor are transplanted into a recipient. These stem cells, typically derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood, possess the ability to regenerate and rebuild the recipient's immune system, replacing damaged or dysfunctional cells. The process involves conditioning the recipient's body with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to eliminate existing diseased cells and make space for the donor cells. While hematopoietic transplantation offers the potential for long-term remission or cure, it also carries risks of complications, such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), where the donor cells attack the recipient's tissues, and infections due to weakened immunity, necessitating careful monitoring and management post-transplantation. Common disease states that may require stem cell transplantation include leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, especially when standard treatments have failed or the disease is in advanced stages.
