Adoptive families may seek mental health services for various reasons. This course provides a historical overview of adoption trends in the US and discusses various options for families considering adoption, including international and intercultural adoption. It offers the clinician a framework for working with adoptive families and reviews common issues that may arise. Course Objectives: * Describe the evolution of current trends underlying adoption in the United States. * Identify different types of adoptions. * Explain the challenges of special needs, interracial, and intercountry adoptions. * Explain the developmental considerations that may affect the adopted person and his or her parents. * Describe ways in which the mental health practitioner can assist adoptive families.
