Course overview

This interactive lecture addresses two of the most important things you need to know in the prehospital setting: to provide and maintain airway patency and pulmonary ventilation. The failure to adequately ventilate a trauma patient and maintain oxygenation of organs causes additional damage, such as secondary brain injury. Ensuring airway patency and maintaining the patients oxygenation and supporting ventilation are critical in improving the likelihood of a good outcome. After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to: Discuss the potential causes of airway obstruction in a trauma patient. Demonstrate the steps of a primary and secondary survey of a trauma patients airway. Choose the most appropriate airway management intervention based on the patients physical findings and consideration of risk versus benefit. Describe the structural differences in the anatomy of adults and children.
