Course overview

This interactive lecture explores caring for a patient in labor and assisting with childbirth in the prehospital setting. Despite the overwhelming trend toward childbirth in a healthcare setting, a significant number of parents choose to deliver their child at home. Almost 1% of childbirths occur each year outside the hospital setting. Less than two thirds of home births involve a certified nurse midwife or lay midwife. For these patients, EMS practitioners may become the only trained option when complications develop for the mother or newborn child. After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to: Identify common high-risk complications during childbirth. List the steps of managing a delivery. Identify cardiopulmonary failure in the newborn. Understand the causes of central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction in the newborn. Describe resuscitation of a newborn.
