Course overview

This interactive lecture explores the three systems of the body that are responsible for cellular energy production: the airway, lungs, and circulatory systems. These systems are affected most often by trauma and can be managed in the prehospital setting. Knowledge of the relationship of these systems to each other helps the prehospital care provider to recognize and manage potential life-threatening conditions. Early recognition and management of compromise in these systems of the body helps to prevent later complications and trauma patient death. After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to: Explain the concept of cellular energy production as it relates to injury. Identify the systems and components critical to the production of energy. Explain the methods of energy production and cellular metabolism. Compare and contrast aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Relate the different classes of shock to energy production and cellular metabolism. Explain how the bodys systems respond following a traumatic event. Illustrate the failure of energy production. Summarize the most common types of shock and the signs and symptoms of each. Explain the pathophysiology of shock and its progression through phases. Classify the different types of shock on an etiologic basis. Determine prevention and treatment strategies for the different classifications of shock.
