Research consistently shows that a disproportionate amount of LGBTIQA+ teens and young adults have mental health presentations compared to their peers. These experiences aren't because they are queer - being LGBTIQA+ is not a diagnosis, but because of the minority stressors and intersectionality of trauma experienced in their lived experience of their authentic sexuality and gender expression. LGBTIQA+ people need therapists that truly embody the therapeutic ally-ance: the capacity to be strong, compassionate allies in the therapeutic relationship. Without the lived experience of the LGBTIQA+ community, many therapists unintentionally cause rupture or miss cues of safety for their clients, disrupting the therapeutic experience. Join Dr Polly McGee to discover the strategies, tools and structures of creating belonging for your LGBTIQA+ young adult clients so as a therapy community we can better consciously support and celebrate identity and secure belonging through our clinical practices.
