Course overview

In the 2020 census of the United States population, 1 in 6 people were over 65 years of age. A vast majority of rehabilitation professionals will work with geriatric individuals. These patients have specific physiologic changes because of aging that can be significantly affected by strength training interventions. The successful prescription and implementation of strength training can have significant short and long-term quality-of-life benefits for the geriatric patient. This course will cover the most current evidence on strength training for older individuals in rehabilitation. This course will provide the attendees with tools to improve their understanding of physical declining function as it applies to rehabilitation patients. It will provide the most recent evidence in clinical testing for pre-frail/frail/sarcopenia. The discussion will cover the analysis of data from testing into exercise prescription. Specific exercise interventions to improve function will be demonstrated and practiced allowing the attendee to immediately use in the clinic.
