Course overview

CEU Course Description More than 20 million people worldwide suffer from sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is an inherited red blood cell disorder caused by a gene mutation and is the most common genetic disorder in the United States. Sickle cell disease commonly affects people of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic descent. Sickle cell disease can cause many health complications, including severe pain, stroke, blood clots, and increased risk of infections. In this course, participants will learn the common types of sickle cell disease and the sickle cell trait, how sickle cell disease is diagnosed and treated, and the symptoms and complications of sickle cell disease. CEU Course Objectives 1. Identify the common types of sickle cell disease. 2. Describe the causes and diagnostic criteria of sickle cell disease. 3. Recognize potential health complications of sickle cell disease. 4. Identify prevention and treatment options for sickle cell disease.
