Course overview

This course aims to equip nurses with the expertise to perform tapping techniques proficiently to help patients in coping with and alleviate symptoms of anxiety. Nurse-led Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)/tapping is a therapeutic intervention that registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses can facilitate independently to address patient stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. Nurses will learn the technique from easy-to-follow illustrative graphics in addition to using The Tapping Solution App. The technique is easy to explain to patient, is cost effective, portable, and does not require a prescription. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)/tapping involves gentle tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on specific thoughts, emotions, or symptoms while simultaneously saying focused "affirmations" or "set-up phrases." Nurses may lead individuals or groups and perform structured tapping sequences in the hospital, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), or home health settings, as well as provide support, guidance, and education throughout the process. Nurse appraisal of patient anxiety levels will include verbal feedback on a zero to 10 rating scale after each session, or non-verbal observations such as facial grimace and vital sign assessment. Nurses will evaluate feedback and adjust care plans for additional sessions of tapping if needed. Tapping is a self-care and empowerment tool that enhances patient care planning, management, and promote positive outcomes.
