Course overview

The acute care setting is a unique and rewarding setting for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants to work with patients with a highly variable class of diagnoses. In addition to providing physical therapy services, clinicians in this setting must also be able to quickly adapt treatment to respond to patients' changing status and functional needs. Clinicians must be able to identify when patients' vitals, physical presentation, or laboratory values make the patient appropriate or inappropriate for treatment. This course will cover vital sign ranges and laboratory values that are essential to providing safe and effective care in the acute care setting. This course will also review some of the most common conditions treated and treatment techniques in acute care, including care provided in trauma units, intensive care units (ICU), and progressive care unit (PCU) in acute care.
