Course overview

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) required the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop regulations protecting the privacy and security of certain health information. To fulfill this requirement, HHS published what are commonly known as the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the HIPAA Security Rule. This class will present summaries of both rules and how they affect the practice of dentistry. Also covered is the ADA Code and its statements regarding basic ethical principles and their relevance to the HIPPA standards of confidentiality and trust. There are recommendations for dentists to be in compliance with those rules and information available on the ADA website.
