Prenatal Breastfeeding Education

Course overview

This educational module provides the RN/ LPN with an outline of topics to include in prenatal education to prepare the pregnant population with the best information. After completing this module the mother-to-be will feel adequately prepared and confident to breastfeed directly after giving birth. Both the care provider and the pregnant woman will be able to identify any current risks via medical or surgical history that may impact breastfeeding. Planning strategies and solutions before the birth, can be empowering to the patient and increase the chances of breastfeeding success. Having this information before delivery can provide the mother-to-be with peace of mind and time to gather supplies, for example; electrolytes and minerals to ensure hydration before and after delivery, especially if she is planning on delivering in a hospital. She may have realized that she has an inverted nipple, and this knowledge can help her anticipate what tools to use to enable success in latching. Being aware of the changes in her breasts and knowledge of the breastmilk production from colostrum to mature milk, can alleviate 'the unknown' and better prepare her for realistic expectations in the first few days of her infant's life.
