Today the projections of joint replacement are that by the year 2030, 6 million Americans will have their knee or hip replaced! This rise in joint replacement surgery coupled with advances in cutting edge surgical and pain management techniques as well as the trend towards same day surgery makes it imperative that the question for us as clinicians be: Are we educationally ready to provide current and progressive rehabilitation for the rising joint replacement population? Joint replacement surgeries are on the rise and the patients today are quite different than the traditional patients learned about in school. Clinicians were taught precautions and restrictions with the goal being to rehabilitate in order for the patient to dress, groom and perform self-care. Today the "Baby Boomer" joint replacement patient has a higher expectation out of their rehabilitation provider. Patients today want to be able to use their prosthesis to get down on the floor and play with the grandkids, ski and hike. Their desire to remain active has rehabilitation implications for clinicians in all settings. Understanding modern technology and being able to confidently educate the patient is extremely important in the total plan of care. This highly interactive seminar will provide the attendee the evidence-based knowledge to answer those often on the spot questions by our patients such as "what should I not do?" or "when can I hike or play tennis again?" This course will examine surgery from the traditional to the most cutting-edge approaches in addition to evidence-based rehabilitation and return to activity guidelines.
