Course overview

Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect for newborns and are the leading cause of birth defect-associated infant illness and death. Congenital heart defects affect the structure and blood flow of the heart and can cause lifelong health problems. These defects range from mild to severe, and different types can require medical intervention within the first year of life. In this course, participants will learn the different types of congenital heart defects, the prevalence and risk factors for different types of congenital heart defects, common symptoms, diagnostic criteria, different treatment options, and the implications of congenital heart defects across the lifespan.
