Course overview

The goal of cultural competency within a healthcare organization is to ensure patient safety and provide efficient, effective care. Because the area served by your facility is likely comprised of people from various populations, it is important that you develop a personal approach for making clinically-important observations about patients of differing cultures. Suggested Audience: All hospital staff, volunteers and students working within healthcare facilities including, but not limited to: Physicians, Providers, IT Support, Nursing, Lab, Radiology, Emergency Room, Billing, Patient Access, Dietary, Housekeeping, and other Ancillary Service Departments. Also EMTs/Paramedics, Guest Services workers, Therapy, Activity and Administration departments. Upon completion of this presentation, you should be able to: Identify cultural needs of patients. Document relevant patient preferences. Recognize the need for interpretation services. Identify cultural differences that may affect interactions with patients.
