Course overview

It is estimated that up to 15% of children are labeled with emotional and behavioral disorders, with up to 85% of children with developmental disorders exhibiting challenging behaviors. Adults who work with children are tasked daily with managing problematic behaviors that interfere with the child's relationships, learning and daily task participation as well as their ability to benefit from skilled interventions. Understanding the causes of these behaviors and using a child-centered perspective to influence behaviors allows the practitioner to avoid power struggles, reduce task avoidance, increase participation in therapeutic activities, and improve overall functional outcomes of therapy as well as educate and support caregivers on strategies for effective use in the home and community. This course will present a client-centered perspective of behavior and provide participants with a structured problem-solving method that generates practical and easy to implement solutions to reduce or eliminate challenging behaviors. Participants will improve their skills for analysis of behaviors, learn how to identify strengths-based strategies that are more likely to be successful, and be able to implement practical solutions the next day that have an immediate effect on their clients behavior and participation.
