Substance Use Disorder in Pregnancy, Part 1

Course overview

In the US, drug and opioid overdose deaths have nearly quadrupled over the last decade. Synthetic opioid-related deaths increased 850% in women. Nearly 85% of pregnancies in women with substance use disorder (SUD) are unintended. During pregnancy, chronic untreated substance and opioid use disorders are associated with lack of prenatal care, preterm birth, fetal death, and other pregnancy complications. Fetal effects of substance use disorder (SUD) are many: drug metabolite exposure, teratogenic effects, abnormal growth, decreased fetal movements, and NAS. This activity will present an overview of SUD in pregnancy and highlight strategies to assist with addressing the issues.
