Course overview

Patients with multi-trauma have usually sustained significant primary injuries and can be at heightened risk of a number of secondary complications. They may also experience socioeconomic burdens associated with their injuries including extended periods without income and an inability to fulfil previously established roles. Early acute care rehabilitation initiated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can positively affect a patient's functional status muscle strength time spent on mechanical ventilation walking ability at discharge and health-related quality of life. Ensuring continuity of care from the acute setting to discharge and beyond is also essential to achieve optimal outcomes. This course discusses a case study of a patient with complex orthopaedic trauma and provides a broad overview of principles related to clinical decision-making in acute care. This course aims to present a broad overview of key concepts and principles related to acute care and clinical decision-making for rehabilitation professionals. It also aims to explore strategies to enhance continuity of care focusing on the acute care setting.
