In a unique and extraordinary classroom setting, nestled in the mountains of Montezuma, Costa Rica, returning students will have the unparalleled opportunity to take a deep dive into the ethical and cultural considerations of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. As this cutting edge technology works its way through the FDA approval process and continues to grow in popularity, therapists need to be informed, on-guard and cautious when considering the potential use of these powerful substances by their clients. Whether legally, underground, or in other countries, psychedelics are increasingly being used by thousands of people, and many clients are turning to licensed therapists for counsel regarding preparation, integration, and guidance with respect to the questions they may have, the realizations they encounter and the changes they wish to make going forward. How prepared are we to help them examine the risks and benefits, and how prepared will we be when these substances become mainstream? This course will examine the topic from multiple angles. positioning the practitioner to be ethical, aware and informed. Other areas to be explored in this course include: diversity, equity, and inclusion; culturally responsive behavior; identification of risks, not only for the client, but for the therapist, including risk from licensing boards, potential litigation, and peer disapproval. The class will be highly interactive, with small group discussions, role plays, and the opportunity to connect with nature in a the most biologically diverse country on earth.
