Course overview

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice developed to assist people through the change process. This training will apply interactive methods to enhance the learning experience through the observation of videos, exercises and real plays. Participants will obtain in-depth knowledge of one of the four tasks of MI; evocation. This task is largely what sets MI apart from other EBPs by leveraging a concept called change and sustain talk. Upon completion, participants will have developed an advanced understanding of change and sustain talk. Additionally, specific skills will be learned to evoke and reinforce change talk and to soften sustain talk. Objectives: 1. Judge the difference between sustain and change talk statements. 2. Develop three strategies to evoke change talk. 3. Evaluate strategies to respond to sustain talk. 4. Role-play the ability to both grow change talk and soften sustain talk.
