- Question nerve and muscle problems and chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy.
- Chart and report questionable muscle and nerve problems to the client's physician.
- List and discuss possible massage therapy contraindications with the client and their healthcare team.
- Maintain current knowledge associated with the client's illness to share with the client and their medical team, and keep leading edge of massage therapy practices about the client's disorder.
- Make appropriate adjustments to the massage session regarding "level of demand," areas to avoid, and client positioning.
- Adjust massage application during recovery by implementing corrective action, such as with "Systematic Touch."
- Realize the delicacy of other tissues, such as bones, when working with cancer patients.
- Recognize fears and anxiety associated with severe and chronic pain diseases and that negative stress can internalize.
- List and share with healthcare teams the essential oils that can be harmful when used with certain conditions, such as during a chemotherapy regime.
- Consider the preventive measures of living a healthy lifestyle and discuss studies and statistics on the values.
- Study and discuss medical treatment options to create and have available the best massage therapy approach for each.
- Design a massage program that enhances the client's ability to live easier and in less pain with their arthritis.
- Handle special circumstances with consideration when things like Lupus flare ups occur.
- Realize that massage therapy can harm persons with diseases like scleroderma without proper education and application.
- Name alternative arthritis therapies, so the client knows their options.
Course overview
This home study is approved by NCBTMB and the Florida and Louisiana Board of Massage Therapy for a maximum of 12 CE hours. Course Description: Pathologies I, Advanced Studies (Home Study) This advanced study is designed to increase knowledge and awareness of specific pathologies (their backgrounds and potential natural and allopathic treatments) and how they interconnect with your profession and professionalism. It is presented in a home study format, requiring a small test at the end. Two topics from our seminar series comprise this home study: cancer and arthritis, plus a bonus section on skin disorders at the end. There are over 100 types in both categories. We do not cover all 100 for cancer and arthritis, but we have chosen ones we felt therapists might see more often in their careers. Learn how to recognize symptoms, understand related psychological dynamics, become aware of side effects, and read how massage can help and what massage approach works best and safest. Information on how allopathic professionals combine natural remedies for alternative unions is included, which is particularly interesting and surprising in oncology. Also discussed are causes and prevention, facts, and stats!
