Course overview
Over the past two decades, several large-scale epidemiological studies have demonstrated that a significant percentage of persons in mental health and substance abuse treatment have co-occurring disorders. We have found, however, that many training programs have not yet incorporated information about the relationship between mental health and substance use disorders into their curricula. For persons who are working as counselors, the research evidence that has accumulated over the past decade is not well organized for translation to clinical practice and is not accessible to them at their worksite or in the context of their work demands. This training series offers a comprehensive overview for counselors on topics related to assessing and treating persons with co-occurring disorders. Consisting of nine modules, this online course can be completed all at once or in sections and submitted per online instructions for credit.
