Course overview

The “Clinical Applications of Humor in Therapeutic Relationships” Part 2 course is designed to introduce you to the “serious” nature of therapeutic humor by introducing practice and training. You will learn how to integrate therapeutic humor into your clinical practice as well as learn ways to enhance your "humor quotient". Clinical examples as well as videos will illustrate many ways to integrate humor into health and wellness relationships. As a clinical tool, therapeutic humor can be used for diagnosis and treatment as well as to enhance communication and deepen the therapeutic alliance. Learning Objectives: 1. Create new ways to expand one's own sense of humor. 2. Understand the relationship between distressing emotions and health. 3. Understand the relationship between negative thinking and health. 4. Embrace how humor helps develop the therapeutic alliance. 5. Evaluate when to use humor in healthful ways. 6. Understand the risks associated with using humor as a clinical intervention. 7. Identify how to respond to humor interventions that do not result in desired or intended outcomes. 8. Identify appropriate and inappropriate targets of humor. 9. Identify how humor can be used as a diagnostic too.l 10. Identify how humor can be used as a treatment tool. 11. Understand how to develop and expand one's humor interventions. 12. Identify the core conditions that must be present in order for humor to be therapeutic.
