Course overview

According to the article by Jacquelin Donovan published in Clinical Rehabilitation in 2023, more than 1 in 2 people who fall have a vestibular dysfunction. Recognizing and assessing vestibular dysfunction can be a challenge because not all of our patients fit into the box of BPPV, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. This course includes but goes beyond BPPV to address a variety of vestibular dysfunctions affecting our older adults. Watch Janene Barber, well known for her years of experience in assessing and treating vestibular and gait and balance issues, as she summarizes the research on this topic and then demonstrates a variety of proven assessments and treatment techniques using a real older patient. As noted in a recent article she published in GeriNotes, Eyes are the Window to Gait? Part One - The Role of the Oculomotor System in Safe Ambulation, clinicians need to be able to identify oculomotor deficiencies with research supported bedside assessments and employ therapeutic interventions to address the oculomotor system of actual patients. In a very practical and engaging way, this course provides foundational skills and provides meaningful updates for clinicians working with older adults who have vestibular dysfunction.
