Course overview

Finding cancer is not the only role of a histotechnician. In this session we will review infectious diseases of the brain, including bacteria, fungi, parasites (like amoebas and cysticercosis), viruses, and their disease processes that affect the function of the living human brain. We will take an epidemiological approach to disease transmission and onset, while discussing the impact of the roles of histotechnicians, from fixation to staining processes, to help delineate diagnosis of infectious neuropathologic disease. We will briefly discuss the importance of trouble shooting frozens, fixation, and processing of brain tissue, and review presentation material through a fun interactive histology stain identification game.
