Course overview

At the conclusion of this program, participants will: 1. Identify various functions and impairments associated with brain disease; 2. Describe normal aging and brain function; 3. Distinguish treatable versus irreversible symptoms of dementia; 4. Define types of cognitive test that may be helpful for identifying cognitive impairment; 5. Describe at least two changes in communication strategies as the disease progresses; 6. Describe root causes for behaviors in persons with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder (ADRD); 7. Describe the role of cognitive screening in early detection of cognitive changes; 8. Describe at least two commonly prescribed medications and their potential adverse effects; 9. Identify risk factors for malnutrition and dehydration, and how these are recognized; 10. Describe how routines and schedules benefit people with ADRD; 11. Describe the risk of wandering and strategies to maximize safety; 12. Describe how caregiver stress can be evaluated, and strategies for addressing same.
