The field of molecular pathology is witnessing a surge in targeted therapies, particularly in oncology. However, this growth intensifies the workload for pathologists and the laboratory technicians who are undertaking the task of solid tumor extraction. Accurate tumor enrichment becomes paramount for reliable molecular diagnostic testing, preventing false negatives and ensuring correct interpretation of molecular results. Traditionally, pathologists mark tumor-dense regions on glass slides for macrodissection and estimate tumor content, a time-consuming and subjective process susceptible to interobserver variability. Digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI) offer avenues to address these challenges, enhancing molecular pathology services. In our workshop, we'll highlight the drawbacks of manual processes, underscoring their impact on patient care and costs. We'll delve into how digital pathology and AI can not only bridge histopathology and molecular labs but also streamline workflows, promoting efficiency, standardization, and accuracy for patient treatment plans. Our focus will be on how AI standardizes quality control tasks, and tumor cell quantification before molecular testing, integrated via a digital workflow using Indica's HALO AP image management system. HALO AP facilitates slide and metadata ingestion, employing AI solutions to screen samples applying a quality score, identify regions of interest based on tumor density heatmaps and providing real-time, accurate tumor content reporting. The platform streamlines the use of digital annotations for macrodissection regions, offering tools for annotation smoothing/simplification to align with practicalities of the macrodissection process, enhancing workflow efficiency. Moreover, HALO AP's reporting features integrate digital signatures and audit trails, ensuring data integrity and regulatory compliance. By truly leveraging the benefits of digitization and combining advanced technology, AI-based automation, and user-friendly features we aim to showcase options to address the challenges of traditional macrodissection and redefine laboratory workflows to sets new standards for precision, efficiency, and collaboration in molecular pathology.
