Course overview

This course provides an overview of Midline catheter types and insertion techniques. Midline catheters are a type of peripheral catheter used to provide venous access for patients requiring medication infusion therapy for more than five days but less than a few weeks. They can come in different lengths and configurations, use ultrasound guidance and the type of catheter chosen depends on the intended purpose and duration of use, as well as other factors. Accelerated Seldinger, Modified Seldinger and Seldinger are types of Midline catheters inserted in the arm or forearm, with the tip not extending past the axillary cavity. They are ideal when the expected duration of use is more than a week but less than a month but can remain in place as long as clinically necessary and without complications. This course and other courses on Midline catheters comprise the Midline Pathway of knowledge at PICC Excellence.
