At the completion of this home study activity, pharmacists will be able to: Describe how to ensure that all patients with valid prescriptions have access to controlled substances; Use the database of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program; Evaluate prescriptions for their appropriate therapeutic value; Identify prescriptions that are not based on a legitimate medical purpose; Recognize the laws and regulations related to prescribing and dispensing controlled substances; Properly store and dispose of controlled substances; Establish protocols for addressing and resolving issues identified during drug utilization review; Provide education on emergency treatment for suspected opioid overdose; Counsel patients with opioid prescriptions; Identify available treatment resources for physical dependence, addiction, misuse, or abuse of opioids. At the completion of this activity, the technician will be able to: Use the Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs Database; Assess prescriptions for appropriate and accurate information; Recognize the laws and rules related (Pharmacy Technicians) to the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances.
