Course overview

Geriatric patients face a multitude of challenges and barriers leading to function decline. Sánchez-Sánchez et al. (2022) report falls as a definitive factor not only leading to injury in the geriatric population, but also loss of function, socialization, and overall quality of life. This course aims to equip therapists and trainers with current evidence-based approaches to make lasting changes for their geriatric patients to improve physical, cognitive, and QoL-related activities. Current best-practice recommendations will be applied to enhance function in these dual-task performance areas leading to improved gains and independence for geriatric patients. Focus will also be paid to considerations that promote the continuation of activities and programs for patients following discharge. This course will apply current evidence-based geriatric treatment recommendations to feasible approaches clinicians can apply the next day in the clinic. Through case studies, video demonstration, and discussion best-practice approaches to facilitate function for geriatric patients will be presented for immediate use with clients. This professional development activity will present interventions that will enhance the patient's motor and cognitive function to promote lasting functional gains.
