Course overview

Learner Objectives: The Pacific Chapter of the UHMS continuing education mission is to promote educational activities for physicians and allied health professionals in the local and regional areas. These activities are based on a needs assessment of the members and on the recommendations of the UHMS Panel of Expert Opinion. These activities will improve the scientific and practical knowledge in the areas of hyperbaric oxygen treatment and diving medicine. Specific lecture objectives: This lecture will cover a somewhat blurred line between mild (Light) hyperbaric treatments and clinical evidence based hyperbarics. Risk factors will be discussed with the use of non-approved hyperbaric chambers within the United States and the importance of educating laypersons about the difference and misleading aspects of the social media promotion of mild hyperbaric treatments for off label concerns. This talk with cover the most notable changes in the 15th edition of the Indications Manual. This talk will give a timeline of the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center hyperbaric program and a discussion of the events that led to its closure as well as lessons learned that could affect other facilities. In early November 2023, CMS published the final OPPS rule, which listed a 42% reduction in G0277 (HBO2/30 min segment) in the HOPD environment. This change was inconsistent with the proposal rule published earlier in the year. This lecture will provide an overview of the cause and action the UHMS took with industry partners to reverse the change.
