Emotional neglect is a very common but often under-discussed and unrecognized form of trauma and childhood mistreatment. Often clients present to therapy or other social services with a variety of challenges with emotion regulation, self-identity, self-esteem, and relationships. These clients may find themself confused, asserting things such as "I was never abused" or "I always had food on the table," therefore feeling shame and confusion about why they feel the way they do. Emotional neglect is sometimes considered the "invisible" form of trauma, as it can be hard to identify as a direct cause of a child's current emotional or behavioral challenges.
