Course overview

In critically ill patients, beta-lactam antibiotics exhibit highly variable pharmacokinetics (PK) which leads to unpredictable therapeutic and toxic effects. Beta-lactam therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) can improve precision dosing and clinical outcomes but has not been widely implemented in most hospitals around the world. This presentation will discuss the practical considerations and necessary communication between clinical and laboratory physicians to successfully implement a beta-lactam TDM program at one medical center and the organizational infrastructure required, clinical workflows/tools, educational strategies, and supportive materials necessary. Outcome data from adult and pediatric ICU patients will be shared from the results of this program.
