Safety in Home-Based Care: Situational Awareness

Course overview

Healthcare practitioners entering community and home contexts are often unprepared to care for their own safety. In particular, unsafe situations such as violence, animal encounters, and substance use are often under-discussed, and practitioners are rarely trained on handling these situations. Thus in this course, practitioners will learn strategies for being more cognizant of their safety, address safety in a variety of situations, and consider how their own emotions and mental well-being impact their overall safety. An interview with a law enforcement office will provide additional information on safety that can be applied to healthcare practice.
