Course overview

Dysphagia is a pressing issue in medical malpractice cases, with increased litigation due to advancements in research, diagnosis, and treatment. CMS has set forth regulations for care and documentation requirements for services reimbursed by Medicare. ASHA's code of ethics and scope of practice are pivotal in establishing expectations for competent clinicians. Despite dysphagia often comprising 60% of a speech pathologist's caseload, some SLPs report having completed less than one semester of coursework on the subject, and some even claim to have no dysphagia experience in their graduate clinical practicum. This course will address dysphagia litigation, supervision, clinician proficiency, standard practice of care, education, red flags in documentation, and scenario analysis.
