Course overview

This session reviews presentation and risk for perinatal mental health conditions in Black birthing persons, further contextualized by influences such as stigma, trauma and care inequities. The training also identifies prominent barriers to care among Black moms and birthing persons and discuss cultural considerations for assessment. To support the efficacy of care and treatment, this session provides strategies for perinatal mental health assessment that considers the cultural contexts and lived experiences of Black perinatal persons. The session closes with a discussion of best practices in collaborative, culturally matched care and referral to support and treatment. Level of Course: Beginner Objectives: 1. Review perinatal mental health conditions and barriers to accessing care prominent among Black birthing persons. 2. Identify strategies for perinatal mental health screening and referral that consider the cultural contexts and lived experiences of Black moms and birthing persons. 3. Discuss best practices in collaborative care and how to connect Black perinatal persons to supportive services.
