Course overview

Course Description: This course is based on an award winning article written by Janet Sonne. It can be found on the internet at wonderful website developed and run my Ken Pope, PhD. The article that serves as the course materials for this course describes what is meant by the term nonsexual multiple relationships and posts a possible reason for why so many clinicians think that multiple relationships means accidental meetings or encounters. The article goes on to describe a model for making ethical decisions with regard to multiple relationships with clients. The decision making is based in part on a series of factors, therapist factors, client factors, therapy relationship factors and other relationship factors that all play an integral role in the decision making model. According to the author, “the model is designed to serve as a practical checklist of elements for therapist to consider as they engage in the complex process of recognizing and then deciding whether or not to enter nonsexual relationships with their clients.” This article is easy to read and very well written. In fact, it received the APA Division 43 Award as best CE article in the Independent Practitioner in 2007. It provides a clear and understandable framework for identifying and making ethical decisions with respect to dual relationships with clients. Therapists from every area including clinical social workers, licensed psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and substance abuse counselors can benefit from this course on ethical decision making. This course is also appropriate for nurses, dieticians, nutritionists and midwives as a framework for understanding ethical practice. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their clinical skills in the area of ethical decision making. Many states that require continuing education require coursework in ethics for license renewal. This course may meet part of your ethics ce requirements for license renewal in your state.
