SGLT2 Inhibitors & the Diabetic Cat: What We've Learned So Far

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have emerged as an exciting new treatment option for feline diabetes mellitus. The SGLT2 inhibitor drug class controls hyperglycemia by promoting glucosuria via selective blockade of renal glucose reabsorption, and several recent veterinary publications have added to the collective knowledge of the importance of SGLT2 inhibitor therapy for diabetes treatment. With US approval of these drugs having occurred only recently, it is equally important to remain abreast of new information gleaned from veterinarians' experiences with the clinical use of these drugs. To provide listeners with a comprehensive update of SGLT2 inhibitor use in cats, this presentation will integrate the pharmacologic and physiologic basis for SGLT2 inhibitor use, results from recent research, and input from veterinarians who have used these drugs in clinical patients.
